How to Verify a Mobile Vendor Is Actually AI-Native Before You Commit Budget

Every mobile vendor claims AI capability in 2026. Two questions separate the ones who have shipped AI in production from the ones who have added it to their pitch deck.

Every mobile development vendor claims to use AI in 2026. The claim is on every website, in every pitch deck, and in every proposal. It is also, in most cases, true in at least a narrow sense: most vendors use some AI tool somewhere in their process.

The problem is that "uses AI" and "is AI-native" are meaningfully different. One describes a vendor that has adopted some AI tooling. The other describes a vendor whose entire delivery process has been rebuilt around AI — from how code is reviewed, to how tests are generated, to how documentation is produced. The second vendor ships materially faster and with fewer defects than the first.

If your board has mandated AI, or if you need the fastest possible delivery velocity for a competitive deadline, you need to know which type of vendor you are talking to. Two questions tell you.

Key findings

"AI in the development workflow" and "AI features shipped in production apps" are two different capabilities. Evaluate both separately, but do not treat them as the same claim.

The two verification questions below have specific, observable answers for genuinely AI-native vendors. Evasive or generic responses are themselves informative.

An AI-native vendor — one that uses AI code review, automated visual regression, and AI-generated release notes across every engagement — ships roughly twice as many features per month as a traditional vendor. That velocity difference is the primary reason to choose one over the other for time-sensitive projects.

Why every vendor claims AI now

AI has become a default claim in vendor marketing because it is almost impossible to disprove without asking specific questions. A vendor that uses ChatGPT to draft proposal copy can truthfully say "we use AI in our process." A vendor that has rebuilt its entire code review, testing, and documentation workflow around AI can say the same thing. The claim is accurate in both cases. The delivery difference is substantial.

The shift happened fast. Eighteen months ago, a handful of vendors were experimenting with AI tooling. Today, most vendors have adopted at least some AI tooling. A smaller number have deeply integrated it into the delivery process. A smaller number still have used it to build AI features in production mobile apps.

Your evaluation should distinguish between all three.

Two different things the claim can mean

AI in the development workflow. The vendor uses AI tools to review code before it ships, generate and run automated visual tests, produce release notes, and accelerate documentation. The result is faster delivery, fewer bugs reaching users, and a more consistent communication process. This does not require the vendor to have any AI feature experience. It is about how they build, not what they build.

AI features shipped in production apps. The vendor has built and launched AI capabilities in client apps that real users interact with. Document analysis, smart search, recommendation layers, on-device inference. This requires a different set of skills: model selection, inference optimisation, App Store disclosure compliance, data handling for AI workloads, and post-launch model maintenance.

These two capabilities often coexist in a genuinely AI-native vendor. They are not the same claim and should not be evaluated as one.

The two questions that verify it

Question 1: "What does your AI development workflow look like? Can you walk me through how a feature goes from approved to shipped using the AI tooling you use?"

A vendor with a genuine AI development workflow will walk you through specific steps: how the code review works, what the automated visual testing catches before human QA, how release notes are generated and reviewed, how documentation is maintained. The description will be specific, not categorical.

A vendor without a genuine AI workflow will describe the tools they have access to ("we use Copilot") or the general category of activity ("we use AI to speed up development") without describing the specific steps. The absence of process detail is the signal.

Question 2: "Can you show me a production mobile app where you shipped an AI feature? What was the feature, who built it, and what does the feature do for users today?"

A vendor that has shipped AI features in production will name the app, describe the feature, and be able to tell you what it does for users right now — not at launch, not in a demo, but today. They will also be able to describe the specific challenges: the App Store review process for the feature, the inference approach, the accuracy threshold that satisfied the client.

A vendor that has not shipped AI features in production will redirect to their team's background, their technology choices, or their general approach to AI. These are not answers to the question.

What good answers sound like

On the development workflow question, a good answer sounds like this:

"Every pull request goes through an automated AI review before a human engineer reviews it. The AI review catches type errors, security issues, and common mobile anti-patterns that a human reviewer would catch in a more thorough review. Our human review focuses on architecture and business logic. The AI handles the routine layer. Our average code review cycle is 4 hours. Before we added this, it was about 14 hours."

Specific. Measurable. Describes the process and the outcome.

On the AI features question, a good answer sounds like this:

"We shipped a document classification feature for a healthcare client. Users upload a clinical note and the feature automatically categorises it and populates the relevant fields. The model runs on-device to avoid sending patient data to a server. We went through an App Store review process where we submitted documentation on the model's training data and accuracy thresholds. The feature has been live for eight months. The client's manual data entry time dropped by 40 percent in the first quarter."

Named outcome. Named approach. Named challenge. Ongoing, not historical.

What evasive answers sound like

On the development workflow question, an evasive answer sounds like this:

"We use the latest AI tools across our development process. Our engineers are trained on AI-assisted development and we continuously evaluate new tooling to stay at the forefront."

This describes awareness, not process. No specific tool. No specific step. No measurable outcome.

On the AI features question, an evasive answer sounds like this:

"We have strong expertise in machine learning and have worked on several AI-enabled projects. Our team includes engineers with backgrounds in data science and we are well-positioned to deliver AI features for your app."

This describes capability positioning, not shipped work. No app. No feature. No outcome.

The follow-up test

If a vendor gives good answers to both questions, one follow-up test confirms them: ask to see a sample release note from a recent engagement and ask for a technical call with the engineer who built the AI feature.

The release note shows whether the AI documentation workflow produces specific, useful output or generic placeholder text. The technical call shows whether the engineer who built the AI feature can describe it with precision, or whether the pitch was more polished than the work.

A vendor that passes both questions and the follow-up test is genuinely AI-native. A vendor that cannot produce the release note or deflects the technical call has answered the verification question through its response.
