How to Evaluate a Mobile Vendor's Peak Traffic Track Record
Any vendor can describe their approach to peak traffic. The ones who have actually handled it can tell you the numbers. Here is what to ask and what the answers should look like.

Every mobile vendor pitching an ecommerce engagement will tell you they have experience with high-traffic apps. The vendors who actually do can answer five specific questions with specific numbers. The ones who do not will answer in general terms about their approach, their tooling, and their process.
The difference matters because peak traffic failures are expensive and predictable. A vendor who has shipped an app that handled 10x normal traffic on a sales event has learned the failure modes that a vendor who has not done it will encounter on your event. You pay for that learning either way - the question is whether you pay for it before or during your event.
Key findings
Vendors who have managed high-traffic events can describe specific failure modes they encountered and how they resolved them. This is the signal that separates experience from description. Generic answers about load testing methodology and caching strategy are available to any vendor who has read the documentation. Specific failure mode descriptions with resolution details require having been through the event.
The most reliable verification of peak traffic experience is a reference call with a past client who ran a high-traffic event during the engagement. Ask the reference what the peak concurrent user count was, what the crash-free rate was during the event, and whether there were any incidents. A vendor with a strong track record has references who answer these questions confidently. A vendor without it has references who cannot recall the numbers or describe an event where things went wrong.
Anonymized load test results from a recent engagement are the fastest way to verify performance capability. Ask for the traffic multiple tested, the API response time at each level, and the checkout completion rate during the test. These numbers are objective. A vendor who cannot produce them has not been testing to the standard a high-traffic event requires.
Why the track record matters
Peak traffic performance is one of the few areas in mobile development where theory and practice diverge significantly. The principles - caching, API efficiency, graceful degradation, database query optimization - are well understood. The application of those principles under real event conditions, with real third-party API degradation, real CDN behavior, and real concurrent user patterns, requires experience.
The vendor who has managed a production sales event has made the mistakes that theory does not predict: the third-party fraud detection API that adds 400 milliseconds of latency under load, the payment processor webhook that times out when called 500 times per second, the CDN cache that invalidates at the wrong moment. These lessons transfer to your event. The vendor who has not been through it will learn them on your event.
The questions that produce signal
"Tell me about the highest-traffic event your apps have handled. What was the peak concurrent user count, and what did the crash-free rate look like during the event?"
This question has a specific answer if the vendor has managed high-traffic events. The answer should include a number - not a range, a specific peak concurrent count - and a crash-free rate that is 99.5 percent or above.
"What was the most unexpected failure mode you encountered during a peak traffic event, and how did you resolve it?"
This is the question that separates experience from description. A vendor who has been through a high-traffic event can name a specific unexpected failure. A vendor who has not will describe a type of failure that might happen in theory.
"What does your monitoring plan look like during a sales event?"
The answer should name specific metrics being watched, specific thresholds that trigger escalation, a named escalation path, and a rotation schedule for who is monitoring. A vendor who describes monitoring in general terms has not run a structured event monitoring process.
"Show me the load test results from your last event preparation."
This should produce a document with traffic multiples, response times at each level, and the bottlenecks found and resolved. If the vendor cannot produce it, the load test either did not happen or was not documented.
"What is your rollback plan if something goes wrong during the event?"
A vendor with event experience has a rollback plan. They have thought through what can fail, what the response is, and what the recovery looks like. A vendor without experience will describe a general incident response approach that was not designed for a specific event.
What strong answers look like
Strong answers to these questions share three characteristics: they are specific (named failure modes, specific numbers, documented results), they describe problems that were encountered and resolved (not only smooth events), and they can be verified by a reference call with the relevant client.
A vendor who says "we handled 22 million peak sessions on a fashion ecommerce app during Black Friday with 99.7 percent crash-free rate, and we encountered a CDN configuration issue at the start of the event that we resolved in 14 minutes using a pre-defined runbook" has demonstrated the combination of experience, transparency, and operational maturity that a high-traffic event requires.

Weak answers describe process rather than experience. "We use a comprehensive load testing approach with industry-standard tooling" is a weak answer. It describes what the vendor plans to do, not what they have done.
Weak answers also avoid the failure question. A vendor who cannot describe a specific unexpected failure mode they encountered during a high-traffic event either has not managed one or does not reflect on their engagements in a way that produces transferable learning. Both are disqualifying.
How to verify before committing
Ask for two references who ran high-traffic events during their engagement. Call both. Ask each: what was the peak concurrent user count, what happened during the event, and was there anything that went wrong and how did the vendor handle it?
A vendor with a strong track record has references who answer these questions confidently and specifically. If the vendor cannot provide two references with high-traffic event experience, that is the answer to your question.
